Resource Guide · Local SEO
Most calls for HVAC, plumbing, roofing and other home services start with a “near me” search and end in the Google Map Pack. This guide explains how the Map Pack actually ranks businesses, what to fix first in your Google Business Profile and how to build the website and review signals that keep you there.
Why most contractors stay invisible
These are the issues we find in almost every audit of a contractor that is “not showing up on Google.”
A primary category of "Contractor" instead of "HVAC contractor" or "Plumber" tells Google you are not relevant for the searches that actually pay.
One "Services" page for everything gives Google nothing to match against "water heater repair" or "roof leak repair" searches.
A handful of reviews from two years ago loses to a competitor collecting fresh, detailed reviews every week.
What this guide covers
Local rankings are driven by relevance, distance and prominence. Each pillar below moves one or more of those levers.
Categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, products and posts configured for the jobs you want.
A repeatable system for asking, responding and earning keyword-rich reviews after every job.
Dedicated pages for each core service and each priority city, written for real customers.
Accurate name, address and phone details across Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, BBB and trade directories.
A fast, mobile-first site that Google can crawl, with LocalBusiness schema and clean structure.
Supplier, sponsorship, association and local news links that prove you are a real, trusted local company.
The playbook
Google ranks local results on three factors: relevance (how well your profile and website match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the location in the query) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are, measured through reviews, links, citations and overall web presence). You cannot change distance, so local SEO is the work of maximizing relevance and prominence across the area you serve.
Your primary category is the single most important relevance signal you control. Choose the category that matches your highest-value work (for example HVAC contractor, Plumber, Roofing contractor or Electrician), then add secondary categories only for services you actually perform, such as Air conditioning repair service or Water heater installation service. Check the categories your top three Map Pack competitors use before you decide.
Reviews influence both rankings and conversion. Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment the job is finished, with a direct review link sent by text. Encourage customers to mention the service and their neighborhood naturally, and reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days. Never buy reviews, offer incentives for them or gate them by asking only happy customers; that violates Google policy and can get reviews removed or your profile suspended.
Your Google Business Profile links to your website, and Google reads that site to judge relevance. Create a dedicated page for each core service (AC repair, furnace installation, drain cleaning, roof replacement) and a genuinely useful page for each priority city you serve, with local project examples, service details, pricing guidance and FAQs. Avoid copy-and-paste city pages that only swap the town name; they rarely rank and can drag the site down.
Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical on major data sources and directories. Then earn links that only a real local business can get: supplier and manufacturer dealer pages, local sponsorships, trade associations, chamber of commerce listings and coverage in local news.
Rankings fluctuate by street and by hour. Use a geo-grid rank tracker to see visibility across your service area, add UTM parameters to your GBP website link and use call tracking so you know how many calls and booked jobs your profile produces each month.
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity increasingly answer “best plumber near me” style questions. They lean on the same foundations: a consistent, well-reviewed business entity, clear service pages and mentions on trusted third-party sites. Strong local SEO is the base layer of AI search visibility. See our AI SEO & AI Search guide for the next step.

FAQ
Fixes to your Google Business Profile can improve visibility within a few weeks, but competitive Map Pack rankings usually take three to six months of consistent work on reviews, service pages and local links. Highly competitive metros like Dallas, Phoenix or Atlanta can take longer.
In the Map Pack you rank strongest near your verified address. For surrounding cities, well-built service area pages and Local Services Ads are usually the most effective way to win visibility without opening new locations.
If customers do not visit your location, for example you work from home or a shop customers never visit, Google requires you to hide the address and list service areas instead. Showing a home address can lead to suspension.
There is no fixed number. Compare yourself to the top three businesses for your main keyword and aim to match their total over time while beating them on recency. A steady flow of new reviews matters more than a one-time spike.
Posts have a small direct effect on rankings, but they keep your profile active and help conversion by showing offers, recent projects and seasonal services. Treat them as a sales tool rather than a ranking hack.
They do different jobs. Google Ads and Local Services Ads generate calls immediately while you pay per click or lead; local SEO builds a long-term source of calls you do not pay for per lead. Most growing home service companies run both.
